Pedagogy Workshop
We are now accepting applications for the EduCHI 2026 Pedagogy Workshop! See the call for participation for more details.
The EduCHI Pedagogy Workshop is a one-day event for current doctoral students, postdocs interested in academic careers, and/or first-year faculty members teaching HCI or Design. It is a space to:
- reflect upon the complexity of HCI and design teaching;
- self-reflect on strategies to engage with the teaching side of being a faculty member early in an academic career;
- identify different kinds of supports and resources for developing your teaching competence; and
- discuss challenges and build community around HCI and design pedagogy.
Featuring short talks and interactive sessions about various aspects of HCI pedagogy, participants will leave this workshop not necessarily with answers to all their questions but instead with ideas that they can explore and expand upon to improve their teaching practice.
Schedule
The 2026 Pedagogy Workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.
9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Welcome and Introductions
Facilitated by the workshop chairs, this session will provide an overview of the workshop’s goals, outline the agenda, introduce the facilitators and participants, and review some pedagogical terminology to get everyone on the same page.
9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Session 1: What did I do? Talks + Discussion Sessions
In this session, experienced HCI educators share concrete, classroom-tested practices that have enhanced student learning. Each of the three mini-sessions includes a 10-minute lightning talk followed by a 15-minute guided discussion, giving participants the opportunity to explore how they might adopt or adapt these practices in their own current or future teaching.
- [9:30 a.m. -10:15 a.m.] “Exploring pedagogies of ambiguity & uncertainty”
- [10:30 a.m. -11:15 a.m.] “Invisible Parts of Your Teaching”
- [11:30 a.m. -12:00 p.m.] “Creating a Values-Based Assignment”
12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Lunch Break
1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Session 2: SHARE, CARE, and MAKE Workshop
In this hands-on, activity-oriented session, participants will begin with a gallery walk featuring a curated collection of building blocks drawn from HCI and design educators’ syllabi, project and assignment prompts, and assessment rubrics. This interactive exploration invites attendees to compare approaches, gather ideas, and identify elements they may want to incorporate into their own teaching materials.
After the gallery walk, participants will move into collaborative “building stations,” where guided discussions and peer feedback support the creation of their own syllabus, lesson plan, or assignment with a grading rubric.
3:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Session 3: Draft your Teaching Philosophy
The workshop will conclude with an interactive session focused on articulating and drafting your teaching philosophy aligned with your personal brand. Designed with the academic job market in mind—and valuable as an ongoing professional document—this activity guides participants in synthesizing insights from the day’s sessions to create a thoughtful, personalized draft of their own teaching philosophy.
4:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Closing Thoughts & Thank you
We will wrap up the day with our closing thoughts, reflections, and next steps for workshop participants.
